What is CIFT? - CalCOFI IEH Formatting Tool (CIFT) is a Windows
9x/NT/2000/XP application that allows the user to extract formatted
data from the CalCOFI IEH data archives.
What do I need? - A computer running Windows with
Internet Explorer 6 or higher, CIFT installation files (/software/CIFT/cift_install.html), CalCOFI cruise-sorted IEH data files (included
in installation zip) (FTP Links - CIFT Download;
Where do I start?
-
Download the CIFT
Installation file and unzip it into a temporary directory
- Run the Setup
(setup.exe) program to install.
- Run CIFT2008.exe
(Start/Programs/CIFT/CIFT2008) and initialize the directory paths for
the exe and data. This is only required the first time the program is run
but may be modified in the Query Builder/Output Options form.
- Run your queries/extract
your data.
How do I use the
program? (Detailed CIFT
Instructions with examples.)
- CIFT was designed to be
very flexible - the Query Builder includes all hydrographic data
gathered. The form displays Station data in black, Bottle data in blue.
- Any query/extraction
requires the entry of, at least, the Start Year or cruise number (ie
9910). If only the Start Year or cruise is entered, the End Year will
automatically be set.
- In addition to year(s)
or instead of the year, you may select a specific CalCOFI cruise using
the year and month designation (YYMM such as 9910).
- Or you may select a
specific month, months, or range of months to extract from the year(s).
- Spatial settings will
work in conjuction with Chronological settings.
- Single Station will
extract single station data for the time period set by the
Chronological settings.
- Line(s) allows you to
extract data based on a single CalCOFI line, Line 90 for example; group
of lines using comma-separated lines numbers (80, 90 for example); or a
line range such as 80-93.
- Lat & Lon Box
allows you to extract data based on lat and lon coordinates,
independent of CalCOFI Line & Sta designation
- After you fill out the
query form and clicked Start Query, save your query/extraction settings
into a well-named cfg file (ie 1990-99 Temp Sal vs Depth.cfg). This
will save all the settings so you may reuse/reload them in the data
selection form.
- Reload a config file
using the Config menu item in the upper left corner, modify as needed,
save using a new cfg name then run the extraction routine.
- Please note that the
extraction routine is rather slow even on a fast system and does not
allow efficient multitasking. I am will improve the program's ability
to work in the background but for now, have a cup of coffee, have
lunch, day dream, or go home.
